The Chautauqua Watershed Conservancy is a county-wide organization with a mission to preserve and enhance the water quality, scenic beauty and ecological health of the lakes, streams and watersheds of the Chautauqua region.

 

Since inception in 1990, the CWC has

Acquired 183 acres of land in the Chautauqua Lake watershed as nature preserves to conserve the lake's tributary streams and wetlands

bullet

Led efforts to conserve Chautauqua Lakes few remaining natural, undeveloped shore lands 

bullet

Raised awareness of elected official and public toward lake and watershed concerns

bullet

Provided information to the County Legislature, leading it to adopt a motion in support of conserving Chautauqua Lake's undeveloped shore lands

bullet

Succeeded in getting Chautauqua Lake listed as an open space project eligible for State Environmental Protection Funds

bullet

Distributed information on minimizing yard care impacts on water quality to all Chautauqua Lake shore land owners

bullet

Participated in the development and instruction of a watershed-based curriculum for 1st - 4th graders

bullet

Monitored development projects such as the Wegman's - KMart plaza to ensure that impacts to the lake environment were minimized

bullet

Published and distributed "The Shed Sheet," and informative newsletter to over 800 elected officials, members and interested persons

bullet

Made numerous presentations to local governments and community groups on water pollution prevention and habitat conservation
