Chief purpose of organization:  To increase public awareness and stewardship of aquatic ecosystems through stimulating exhibits, displays, and educational and recreational programs that promote conservation and support research.

The Aquarium has been the center for aquatic education in Western New York since 1965.  The living exhibits, featuring many species and habitats of the Great Lakes Region, are supported by interpretive displays which address Great Lakes issues and concerns.  (Examples are:  invasion by exotic species, lamprey eel predation, endangered species, acid rain.)

The Aquarium's educators present programs to students of all ages both in the facility and at satellite locations through the outreach program.

Its educators participate in community environmental programs throughout the year.  These include "Science Exploration Days" in conjunction with University at Buffalo, "Envirothon," (write, proctor, and correct aquatics portion of exam), "Environmental Conservation Days" at Gasport, Wildlife Festival, National Trails Day.

The Aquarium is also the lead agency in local support of the annual "Beach Sweep" effort, part of the International Coastal Cleanup.
